International work
BAGSO is advocating at level of the United Nations and the European Union and fosters bilateral exchange to improve the quality of life in older age, not only in Germany.
BAGSO has consultative status in the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (UN) and has a representative in the European Economic and Social Council (EESC).
As a member of the European network of older people’s organisations, AGE Platform Europe, BAGSO is involved in the exchange with civil society organisations from other countries. These collaborations contribute to a stronger voice at the level of the EU.
BAGSO’s international work is coordinated by its Secretariat for International Policy on Ageing. Many of BAGSO’s members also engage in international work.
Current activities – highlights
Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing
Since 2016, BAGSO participates actively in the Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing (OEWG-A) at the United Nations in New York. Since 2011, representatives of governments, international organisations and civil society meet there once a year. They discuss about the gaps in international human rights and the content of a UN-Convention on the Rights of Older People.
The tenth session took place in April 2019. It was about education and social security. The eleventh session is still to be scheduled after its original date was cancelled due to the Covid19 pandemic.
